Target Zero
Target Zero is a transformative initiative of the NMDOT
that will coordinate all the transportation safety work currently underway and sharpen the department’s focus on safety in all our work. Target Zero visions a transportation system where every journey is completed safely, with zero driving-related deaths in our state.
Strategic Highway Safety Plan
Data driven plan that articulates strategies that NMDOT will undertake in the next 5 years to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes in New Mexico. Includes road Safety Audits and public input during the Safety Summit.
Highway Safety Improvement Program
The Highway Safety Improvement Program provides federal funding for projects that address identified safety issues with the goal of reducing serious injuries and fatalities of the traveling public.
Rail-Highway Crossing Program

NM Bike Plan

Complete Streets Strategic Plan
A roadmap for how to institutionalize complete streets in New Mexico for roadways built for all modes, and people of all ages and abilities, in a context sensitive manner that considers the roadway location and elements.
State Rail Plan
Describes the current status of the New Mexico rail system, demonstrates the demand for and the benefits of the rail system, and identifies capital infrastructure and operating needs that maintain existing infrastructure and services while also enhancing capacity and improving safety. News and Events
October is Pedestrian Safety Month
The New Mexico Department of Transportation will be having a full campaign this October to encourage New Mexicans toward better safety behaviors to protect pedestrians. During Pedestrian Safety Month 2024, we will be focusing on encouraging drivers to adopt behaviors looking for pedestrians, and pedestrians to adopt behaviors that help them be seen.
