STUDY OVERVIEW
WHERE IS THE STUDY AREA?
The NMDOT is conducting a study on Interstate 40 (I-40) between mileposts 21.7 (near 2nd Street) and 23.7 (near Boardman Drive) at the interchange with New Mexico Highway 609 (Miyamura Drive) including the ramps, Joseph M. Montoya Boulevard (NM 609), Superman Canyon Road, and New Mexico Highway 118 (Old Route 66) within the City of Gallup, New Mexico. I-40 is a major west/east interstate that runs from Arizona to Texas. I-40 is a 4-lane roadway within the study area with two westbound and two eastbound lanes. Miyamura Drive has two northbound and two southbound travel lanes that connect the northeast and southeast sides of Gallup. The Puerco River flows parallel along the south side of the interstate. The lands in the vicinity of the roadway right-of-way consist of City of Gallup, BNSF Railroad, and private.

WHY IS A STUDY BEING CONDUCTED?
In 2024, the I-40 Phase 1-A/B Corridor Study, CN 6101580 (Corridor Study) is close to completion for the section of I-40 between Arizona and Albuquerque. The purpose of the I-40 Corridor Study was to develop a long-term corridor plan to improve traffic operations and reliability; traveler safety; and the condition of I-40 and associated infrastructure. The preferred recommendations included maintaining two lanes on I-40, widening outside/inside shoulders, a 26’ft flush median with concrete wall barrier, adding auxiliary lanes, extending ramps, and addressing bridges, pavement, and drainage deficiencies.
The I-40 Miyamura Interchange and the surrounding street network currently experience operational deficiencies and safety concerns. The current Phase 1-A/B Study will focus on the I-40 Miyamura Interchange to evaluate in detail the geometric configuration and operations of the interchange and adjacent intersections and incorporate recommendations from the larger I-40 Corridor Study.
WHAT ACTIVITES HAVE BEEN FUNDED?
Funding for the study and design development phases includes state dollars (House Bill 2-2022 Legislative Session 9) and federal dollars (Road Fund, and Surface Transportation Program FLEX_NC). The construction phase includes federal funds through the National Highway Performance Programs and the Federal Road Fund.
