STUDY OVERVIEW
WHERE IS THE STUDY AREA?
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is conducting a study on a section of Interstate 40 (I-40) in Gallup, New Mexico. The study area extends from milepost 21.7 (near 2nd Street) to milepost 23.7 (near Boardman Drive) and includes the interchange with Miyamura Drive. The study also covers nearby roads such as the I-40 ramps, Joseph M. Montoya Boulevard (NM 609), Hasler Valley Road, and New Mexico Highway 118 (Old Route 66).
I-40 is a major east–west route that runs across the state from Arizona to Texas. Within the study area, it is a four-lane highway with two lanes in each direction. Miyamura Drive serves as a key north–south corridor, connecting the northeast and southeast parts of Gallup. The Puerco River runs parallel to I-40 along its south side. Surrounding lands include property owned by the City of Gallup, the BNSF Railway, and private landowners.

WHY IS A STUDY BEING CONDUCTED?
In 2024, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) completed the I-40 Phase 1-A/B Corridor Study (CN 6101580), which examined the stretch of Interstate 40 between the Arizona state line and Albuquerque. The goal of that study was to create a long-term plan to improve traffic flow and reliability, enhance safety, and maintain the overall condition of I-40 and its supporting infrastructure.
Recommended improvements from the I-40 Phase 1-A/B Corridor Study included:
- Maintaining two travel lanes in each direction
- Widening inside and outside shoulders
- Adding a 26-foot flush median with a concrete barrier wall
- Adding auxiliary lanes and extending entrance and exit ramps
- Addressing bridge, pavement, and drainage needs
The I-40 Miyamura Interchange and surrounding streets in Gallup currently experience traffic and safety challenges. This focused Phase 1-A/B study will take a closer look at the Miyamura Interchange and nearby intersections to evaluate how the interchange functions today, identify potential improvements, and incorporate recommendations from the larger I-40 Corridor Study.
WHAT ACTIVITES HAVE BEEN FUNDED?
Funding for the study and design phases comes from a combination of state and federal sources. State funding was provided through House Bill 2 from the 2022 Legislative Session, while federal funding comes from the Road Fund and the Surface Transportation Program (FLEX_NC).
The construction phase will be supported with federal funds through the National Highway Performance Program and the Federal Road Fund.
