Suicide is a devastating issue, and we reaffirm our commitment to doing all we can to prevent such tragedies. The New Mexico Department of Transportation extends its heartfelt condolences to the families affected by recent events.

At the request of the Taos County Sheriff, Secretary Ricky Serna has agreed to temporarily close the bridge to pedestrian traffic effective today. Over the past several weeks, Secretary Serna and Sheriff Miera have been in constant communication about potential countermeasures aimed at addressing these situations.

NMDOT will increase contract security personnel from two to three, stationing security guards at both ends of the bridge and assigning a rover to patrol between them.

This action is only one component of a much larger challenge involving mental health issues and gaps in services for those in need.

Secretary Serna and the NMDOT remain fully committed to working with local leaders, mental health professionals, and community advocates in pursuit of effective, compassionate, and meaningful solutions.

In 2018, the Department commissioned a “Detailed Evaluation of Alternatives” to assess structural feasibility for potential suicide deterrent systems on the Rio

Grande Gorge Bridge. NMDOT is currently working with the consultant of the 2018 study to get an updated evaluation and analysis.

While this structural review is ongoing, we have taken steps to enhance safety and provide critical support for individuals in crisis:

  • Crisis Hotline Phones on the bridge have been upgraded to ensure rapid, reliable access to emergency mental health support.
  • 24/7 On-site Security: NMDOT will increase contract security personnel from two to three—stationing guards at both ends of the bridge and assigning a rover to patrol between them.
