US 64 Alignment Study
Tres Piedras (Milepost 222.95) to Taos (Milepost 250.50) in Taos County
NMDOT Control No. 5101660
STUDY OVERVIEW
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is conducting a study of a 27-mile stretch of U.S. Highway (US 64) in Taos County, New Mexico. The study area extends along US 64 between the intersections with US 285 in Tres Piedras and NM 150/522 in El Prado (Figure 1).
The purpose of this study is to identify ways to improve roadway and roadside safety, reduce crashes, address roadway and drainage infrastructure deficiencies, and enhance connectivity along the corridor.
Corridor Needs Identified:
- Roadway geometry and pavement condition deficiencies
- Crossing drainage structure deficiencies
- Safety and access control improvements
- Pedestrian, bicycle, and transit deficiencies
US 64 is a critical connection between Tres Piedras and Taos, providing access to communities, businesses, public lands, and cultural and historic resources. The corridor passes through developed and rural areas, Bureau of Land Management lands, private properties, and Taos Pueblo tribal lands, and includes nationally significant features such as the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and historic transportation corridors.
Where are we in the Process and What are Next Steps?
The study team has evaluated roadway and drainage conditions and has developed some preliminary improvement alternatives. Your involvement in upcoming public events will help us understand local needs, review concerns early, and shape the future construction that genuinely supports everyone who travels the corridor. Learn more below about the upcoming event(s).
PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT
We invite you to join us at a public meeting to learn about the study’s progress,
the existing conditions identified, and the initial design alternatives developed. Your questions and feedback are an important part of this process.
