The New Mexico Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, invites public input on the U.S. 285 Port of Entry and Weigh-in-Motion (POE/WIM) study in Eddy County, New Mexico. The purpose of the study is to determine a suitable location and conceptual design for a new POE/WIM station on U.S. 285 south of Carlsbad between milepost 0.0 and 7.0 near the Texas state line.
The purpose of implementing a new POE to the US 285 corridor is to facilitate the continued economic growth in the region by ensuring the commercial vehicles entering the state are safe and legal. The need arose because of the significant increase in heavy commercial vehicle traffic throughout the corridor; gross vehicle weight must be regulated to protect the state’s infrastructure, improve safety, and ensure commercial drivers are following state law.
Listen to the recorded presentation to learn about the alternatives being considered and the current study team recommendations. Share your comments/questions with our team before October 13, 2023. The goal is to collect public and stakeholder feedback and incorporate this feedback into the alternatives as needed. We anticipate finalizing the study in late 2023 and starting preliminary design in early 2024.
