US 60 Bridges Replacement Project (Near the Abo)
The New Mexico Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, is planning to replace two aging bridges on U.S. Highway 60 (US 60) near the Abo Ruins in Torrance County, New Mexico — and we want to hear from you!
The project will replace:
- Bridge No. 5734 over Espinosa Canyon
- Bridge No. 5735 over Barranco Arroyo
Project Limits: From Milepost 193.88 to Milepost 197.68 on US 60
Right-of-Way: All work will occur within the existing highway right-of-way – no additional land is needed.
This project is funded through a combination of federal and state funds.
WHY THIS PROJECT MATTERS
Both bridges were built in 1957 and have experienced deterioration due to age and use. Replacing them now will enhance safety, reliability, and reduce long-term maintenance needs.
Existing bridge conditions include:
- Two 12-foot travel lanes
- Two 2-foot shoulders
- Metal railing on each side
- Precast concrete girders
PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS
- Over a mile of new asphalt pavement and striping replacement, including two 12-foot travel lanes and two 8-foot shoulders
- A modern single-span prestressed concrete girder design
- 42-inch concrete barrier railing on each side
CONSTRUCTION APPROACH
-
Schedule: Advertise/award in Spring 2026; construction begins Summer 2026.
