Ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Nov. 19 in Hurley
SILVER CITY, N.M.– The first phase of the US 180 Four-Lane Safety Improvement Project will be completed at the end of this week, improving safety, mobility and regional connectivity for residents and visitors of southwest New Mexico.
The $41.1 million project expanded US 180 from two to four lanes between Bayard and Hurley, removed the Hurley overpass, realigned the roadway over the existing railroad tracks and added a crossing at Pit Access Road. Additional improvements include pavement rehabilitation, lighting, widened shoulders and upgraded intersections along the 5.14-mile corridor between mileposts 123 and 128.
“This project is about more than lanes and pavement: it’s about people,” said NMDOT Secretary Ricky Serna. “For families, workers, and travelers throughout Grant County, these improvements mean safer commutes, better access to jobs and services, and a stronger connection between our communities.”
The expansion was funded using a $29 million contribution from the federal American Rescue Plan Act. The remaining $12 million of the project cost was funded through a combination of federal sources and state road fund matching contributions. The improvements were completed six months ahead of schedule.
“This project represents a major step forward for safety and mobility in southwest New Mexico,” said NMDOT District One Engineer Aaron Chavarria P.E. “By expanding US 180, we’re improving access for residents, supporting local commerce and laying the groundwork for future economic growth across the region.”
The remaining phases to complete US 180 expansion from Bayard to Deming are currently being designed. Phase 2 design, approximately 15 miles from Hurley to south of the railroad track crossing at NM 61 junction is set to be complete by the end of the year, estimating a $150 million project cost. Phase 3 would expand US 180 from Grant County line an additional 18 miles, terminating in Deming, NM.
Lt. Gov. Howie Morales will join Cabinet Secretary Ricky Serna, NMDOT officials, local leaders, and the public to celebrate the completion during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Hurley.
