Public dedication ceremony Wednesday, July 16 at 11 a.m.
SANTA FE — New Mexico will mark the 80th anniversary of the Trinity Test with the dedication of a new roadside sign honoring the Trinity Downwinders affected by the blast.
A public dedication ceremony will be held on Wednesday, July 16 at 11 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 380 and NM 525 to unveil the sign and mark the 80th anniversary of the Trinity Test.
The sign is intended to recognize the residents of the Tularosa Basin who were affected. These individuals, sometimes referred to as “Downwinders,” lived near the blast site and experienced health and environmental impacts that continue to resonate today.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), in accordance with House Memorial 50 passed in 2025, installed a new roadside sign at the intersection of U.S. Highway 380 and NM 525 near the Trinity Site, the location of the first atomic weapon test, conducted on July 16, 1945. This new marker serves as an acknowledgment of the people and communities near the test site and provides context for travelers passing through the region.
