WEATHER UPDATE: Major Winter Storm Targeting NM

DOT is encouraging residents to prepare for severe weather beginning this evening, Tuesday February 1st. In a Special Weather Statement, the National Weather Service’s (NWS) Albuquerque office said the combination of an upper-level storm system and an arctic airmass could “produce the most widespread and severe winter weather conditions northern and central New Mexico has experienced this season.” NWS Albuquerque has also issued a Winter Storm Warning for portions of northern and central New Mexico from 5pm on Tuesday the 1st through 12pm on Thursday the 3rd.

A major winter storm will target the region tonight through Thursday with areas of heavy snow, gusty winds, blowing snow, low visibility, bitter cold, dangerously cold wind chills, and potentially widespread travel impacts. Snow will develop over northern NM tonight and spread southward into central NM through Wednesday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected between noon and midnight Wednesday with periods of heavy snow and major travel impacts.
Very cold temperatures and bitterly cold wind chills will persist Thursday through Friday night. Cold weather may extend lingering travel impacts into Friday. Read the report below!
