ALBUQUERQUE – A study has been launched by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) to address traffic congestion and safety concerns at the I-25/I-40 interchange, known as the “Big I.”
The Big I is one of the busiest interchanges in New Mexico, connecting hundreds of thousands of drivers each day. The study will evaluate operational and safety issues, explore potential solutions, and identify improvements to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
Key areas of focus include:
- The I-40 approach segments to the westbound-to-northbound and eastbound-to-northbound ramps.
- The I-25 northbound mainline from the Big I to the Comanche Road off-ramp.
“We know how critical the Big I is to daily travel in Albuquerque,” said NMDOT Cabinet Secretary Ricky Serna. “This study is the first step in finding effective solutions that keep people moving safely and efficiently.”
NMDOT is seeking public input and encourages residents to share feedback through a short online survey.
