Traffic Crash Data Set Request and/or Copy of Uniform Crash/Accident Report

In order to ensure we can provide you with accurate data and efficient service, please provide all required information listed below. Failure to supply sufficient information may result in your request not being processed or in your receiving unanticipated results. There may be a charge for the information requested if the request requires that information contained in the database be retrieved or manipulated or a copy of a database is made for private or nonpublic use. You will be notified of any charges prior to the processing of your request. Up to 15 business days are normally required to fulfill data requests. You will be notified if additional time is needed. The use of the data which you have requested is governed by 23 United States Code § 409. Under this law, the crash data maintained by NMDOT is for purposes of evaluating potential highway safety enhancements on New Mexico roads and to provide statistical data to the public. The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is allowing you to inspect this data with the understanding that you will not use this data contrary to the restrictions in § 409. If you should attempt to use this data in an action for damages against the NMDOT or the State, NMDOT and the State expressly reserve their right, under § 409, to object to the use of the data and including any opinions drawn from the data.

The University of New Mexico’s GPS-Traffic Research Group complies, clean, and publishes statistics, maps, and dashboards containing a variety of information available from annual crash reports are available online at https://gps.unm.edu/tru/index.html. Please review these materials first. If the information you need is not available in the publications, please complete and submit the on line request form below.

Faculty Authorization: Undergraduate requests for traffic data must be accompanied by an official letter of approval from the presiding class professor or instructor. This documentation should verify the academic nature of the request.

Required Documentation: Please note that the New Mexico Department of Transportation cannot process data requests until all supporting letters and institutional contact information have been successfully submitted and verified.

Institutional Review Board (IRB) Authorization: Graduate level research, including Master’s theses, Doctoral dissertations, and institutional research group projects, must be supported by an official approval letter from the University’s IRB. Applicants are required to submit a copy of the approved research proposal along with a comprehensive list of the specific data attributes necessary for the study.

2025-2026 crash data is available but is still considered preliminary and is subject to change. Users may request preliminary traffic crash data for more immediate needs. Datasets that include preliminary data include a formal disclaimer clarifying that the provided dataset is considered preliminary and is subject to change. Finalized data will offer the most reliable Information.

Please note, GIS coding did not start until 2010. The database has evolved over the years, meaning that additional data elements became available starting in 2012 compared to what was available in previous years. You may not receive the same data fields for any information prior to 2012.

Information Level

Select which level(s) you want your data to reflect. Please refer to the Crash Data Dictionary for descriptions of each level of data. Example: a crash between two cars, the first vehicle containing one person and the second vehicle containing four people. This scenario would yield one crash, two vehicles, and five occupants. Crash Level: One row per crash (includes location, crash severity, alcohol involvement, number of injuries).

Vehicle level: One row per vehicle/driver (includes driver or non-motorist age, sex, behaviors, and vehicle information).

People level: One row per occupant (includes age, sex, and belt use for all drivers and passengers).

Geographic Scope

"Statewide" selection includes every crash in the state during the date range selected. To drill down to specific areas or roadways, select "County" or "City", as appropriate.

Location Details

We appreciate as detailed information you can give about the location of the dataset you want us to create. There are three types of geographies: Intersection(s), Stretches of Roadways, and Areas. We appreciate any assistance you can provide to understand your request which will ensure it is completed as quickly as possible.
