LAS VEGAS – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Northeastern and Eastern New Mexico from Friday, January 23, through Saturday, January 24, 2026.
Motorists should be prepared for very difficult to potentially impossible travel conditions for an extended period, particularly along I-40 from Tijeras Canyon to the Texas state line. Hazardous conditions may include reduced visibility, slick roadways, and snow-packed or icy surfaces. The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) urges motorists to slow down, avoid sudden maneuvers, and maintain a safe following distance during winter driving conditions. Motorists should stay at least 50 feet behind snowplows to allow crews to operate safely. Snowplows can create significant blowing snow that further reduces visibility, and operators may make frequent stops while focusing on clearing the roadway. Maintaining proper distance helps ensure the safety of both motorists and plow crews.
