1-25 Improved; Comanche – Montgomery Project

Albuquerque, NM – The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), along with other state and local city representatives celebrated the official groundbreaking of the I-25 Improved; Comanche to Montgomery project. The event marked the commencement of the largest construction project in recent history, a $268M investment, with construction expected to last through Spring 2027. The design and construction will happen concurrently, which allows NMDOT and the contractor to include the most innovative and current construction solutions while ensuring a quality product, in the most cost and time effective approach.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held next to the work zone, featured speeches from key officials and community leaders who emphasized the project’s importance for the region’s future.

PROJECT DETAILS:

The I-25 Improved; Comanche to Montgomery project is designed to:

  • Increase safety for commuters and residents
  • Improve travel times for drivers now and in the future
  • Replace aging bridges and pavement
  • Improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists Improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

The improvements to I-25 will provide significant benefits, including reduced travel times and safer commutes for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians in the Albuquerque area. Currently, there are approximately 102,000 trips by the traveling public that pass through the area daily.  The project represents a substantial investment in the state’s infrastructure and reflects a collaborative effort between the state and community stakeholders. Albuquerque population growth by 2040 is expected to significantly increase traffic congestion and delay at adjacent intersections, freeways, and associated on- and off-ramps.  This project will address the current and future needs of the traveling public.

TIMELINE:

  • Major construction on I-25 in Albuquerque will begin in early August and continue for three years.
  • The contractor will start by shifting travel lanes on I-25 to the inside, so they can work on reconstructing the outside lanes.
  • This technique allows for vehicles to still travel through the work zone while construction is happening during the day and at night. While construction always bring delays, this will minimize delays during the peak hours for New Mexicans.
