NMDOT and partners open NM State Fair by promoting traffic safety

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division in partnership with Safer New Mexico Now, Motorcycle Rights, Motorcycle Safety Foundation, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving will host multiple booths at Expo New Mexico this Thursday, Sept. 8 on Main Street in front of the agriculture building during Law Enforcement Day. Representatives from each organization will be on hand to promote safe driving practices.

Expo New Mexico gates open at 10 a.m. Opening day of the 2022 New Mexico State Fair honors all members of law enforcement. Attendees can check out a highly specialized vehicle used for conducting sobriety checkpoints throughout the state called a BAT (Breath Alcohol Testing) mobile, meet members of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams, and learn about New Mexico’s law enforcement agencies. All law enforcement officers will receive FREE admission with a valid ID.

“The department looks forward to collaborating with our traffic safety partners on this annual event including hundreds of dedicated law enforcement members,” said Transportation Secretary Ricky Serna. “It’s a tremendous opportunity to reach so many New Mexicans in our collective effort to reduce traffic-related injuries and deaths.”

The public can sign up for motorcycle training, practice kick-starting and shifting on a motorcycle. Information on bicycle helmet and pedestrian safety with an emphasis on seatbelt use and proper car seat installation will also be available. In addition, the Buckle Bear mascot will be on hand to take photos with children.
