DESCRIPTION:THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING! \n						\n					\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					\n					\n						NM 554 EL RITO BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT\n						On June 25\, 2026\, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) hosted a second public meeting to discuss the NM 554 El Rito Bridge Replacement Project in El Rito\, NM. \nAt the meeting\, attendees had an opportunity to receive updates about the project\, learn more about the project need\, bridge design\, cultural and natural resource considerations\, and to ask questions and provide input with the project team. \n					\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					\n					\n						PROJECT NEED\n						Based on the bridge’s deterioration level\, limited functionality\, and its obsolete safety features and inadequate load ratings\, NMDOT has determined the bridge has reached the end of its useful service life. \nThe existing timber bridge was built in 1957 and has been in service for almost 70 years. Small timber bridges were used in the past because they were economical and reasonably easy to construct\, especially on less travelled routes. However\, timber bridges were not designed for extended service lives. The nearly 70 years of service provided by the existing El Rito bridge is a very respectable performance! \nThe bridge has significant deterioration at this point\, though. Recent inspections of the bridge found all of its timber beams dry and weathered\, with checks and splits. Some beams have more severe defects\, including full-depth horizontal splits\, heavy wood rot\, and section loss. These\, among other deterioration\, safety\, and carrying capacity concerns\, require the bridge’s replacement. \n					\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					\n					\n						THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT\n						The comment period for this portion of the project closed on Sunday\, July 12\, 2026.
